Sydney is a city that is located in Australia. Sydney is Australia’s largest and oldest city and capital in the state of New South Wales. Sydney lies on a deep harbor which is one of the southeastern coast of Australia. This harbor is called Port Jackson, or also known as Sydney harbor. The city of Sydney was ranked as the nations leading industrial city. Sydney was founded by British back in 1788. They used Sydney as a prison colony. Back then they sent criminals to distant prison colonies. The first governor at this prison colony was Captain Arthur Phillip. Captain Arthur Phillip was the one who chose the site for the harbor because it would supply fresh water. The captain names this site for the British statesman Thomas Townsend, which was Viscount Sydney. The city and the suburbs cover about 670 square miles. Downtown Sydney lies on the south side of the harbor. In Sydney there is a place called The Rocks, which is the oldest section of the city. The Rocks lies near a waterfront.

There was a state redevelopment project that restored many historic structures of The Rocks, which was damaged. This redevelopment project restored many historic structures of The Rocks, which was damaged. The redevelopment project was released back in the 1960’s. Before the British settled, the land had many rock formations. The city’s main street is called George Street, which runs through the center of downtown Sydney. There are many high rise towering buildings in downtown Sydney. There are a series of parks east of downtown Sydney, including Hyde Park, the Domain, and the royal Botanic Gardens. The people of Sydney are called Sydneysiders, mostly all of them have British ancestors. Thousands of other Europeans have settled in the city ever since the 1900’s.

The Sydneysiders talk with an accent but they say a lot of English words. Instead of hello they may say Good day. Most of the year, the climate is very mild, which enables sydneysiders to spend a lot of time outdoors. On a lot of the weekends thousands of sydneysiders go to the beach to surf, sail, and swim or enjoy other water sports. Sydney has 30 beaches and if you like to surf than you would probably want to go to Bondi or Manly Beach. Sydneysiders play games such cricket, tennis and Rugby. A huge county fair in April is the highlight of Sydney’s Royal Easter show.
