Shanghai Hotel Guide

Shanghai is ranked as the world’s largest city. It lies on the Whangpoo River. North of Shanhai, about 14 miles is the Whangpoo River and the Yangtze River these two rivers meet and then empty into the East China Sea. These waterways located near Shanghai make it the leading port and industrial city in China. Until the 1800’s Shanghai was a small trading town. In 1842 China was forced to open this city to foreign trade. The British forced them to do so. Foreigners settled in Shanghai and gained great powers at some city affairs, Americans, Englishmen, Frenchmen, and many other foreigners came to settle in the city of Shanghai.

The foreigners and the people who were there originally made the city of Shanghai the worlds leading trading, and banking center. Much of Shanghai had a western appearance because they built homes, churches, and tall office buildings. In 1949, Chinese communist took over all of China, including Shanghai. There are three main parts of Shanghai which are north; the old foreign section, the original Chinese settlement in the south and suburban areas near these two areas. Part of Shanghai is formed by suburbs, which are unlike American suburbs. In the 1920’s there were skyscrapers that were built on one side of the Whangpoo River and on the other side there are public gardens. Beyond the gardens there are wharves and shipyards that line the river. Lying along the Nanking Road are many department stores and restaurants. An old British racetrack has been made into a sports stadium, which is on this road. Where the foreigners used to live some Chinese families live there. Around Shanghai the communist government made 11 suburbs in the mid-1900’s. In these suburbs there were apartment buildings, farms, shops, schools, and factories built. Almost all of Shanghai’s people are Chinese. There are many universities and research centers there.

A wide variety of products made in Shanghai’s factories. In the nearby Yangtze Valley the textile mills make cotton grow there so they can make clothes from. Electrical equipment, cement, fertilizers, and other products are made in Shanghai. Farmers in suburban areas grow vegetables, cereal grains, and cotton. The government is interdependent of the provincial government. The city has been government. The city has been governed by the army, which controlled a community. Before that time, the Chinese Communist made a committee in which they made government policies that local leaders had to carry out.
