Copenhagen Food-Restaurants information

Fine Dining

Kommandanten *** Ny Adelgade 7 Tel: +45 33-12-0990 This is the city's finest restaurant - officially. It is the only establishment in Copenhagen to have been awarded two Michelin stars which gives you some idea of the quality of the cuisine - and the price you will pay for it. Excellent nonetheless and a great choice for a special treat if you can afford it, and if you can manage to reserve a table. Kong Hans Kælder *** Vingårdstr 6 Tel: +45 33-11-6868 Possessing a coveted Michelin star Kong Hans Kælder is well known among Copenhagen's food lovers. The chef takes his inspiration from a combination of Danish, French and Asian influences - modern Danish cuisine at its finest. Le Sommelier *** Bredgade 63-65 Tel: +45 33-11-4515 Elegant and tasteful, the award-winning Le Sommelier holds true to its name, with a list of vintages approaching 1,000. Expert staff at hand are happy to talk you through the fine wines. On a par with the wine are the delicately prepared dishes. The busy atmosphere evokes an animated, pleasant vibe. Booking is advisable. Noma *** Strandgade 93 Tel: +45 32-96-3297 Noma serves up an amazing selection of innovative Nordic cuisine, borrowing and adapting recipes and ingredients from all over Scandinavia and up to Iceland and Greenland. The menu features some delicious seafood, as well as such delights as pigeon and lamb, the restaurant fully deserving its one Michelin star and the many plaudits it has received.

Danish

Nimb Restaurant *** Bernstorffsgade 5 Tel: +45 33-14-6003 In the Tivoli Gardens, the Nimb is actually two discrete restaurants: the fish restaurant La Crevette serving very fresh and expensive Danish-French seafood and the more traditionally Danish Brasserie Nimb, which is particularly good for lunch. Husmann's Vinstue ** Larsbjørnsstræde 2 Tel: +45 33-11-5886 Since 1981, when women were finally admitted to this very traditional Danish lunch restaurant, the reputation has continued to spread. Only open from 11h00-18h00, the selection of smørrebrød is one of the best around. Sankt Gertruds Kloster ** 32 Hauser Plads Tel: +45 33-14-6630 The medieval arches of Sankt Gertruds Kloster illuminated by 1,500 candles evoke a thoroughly antiquated atmosphere where you can dine on classic Danish dishes served by friendly staff. Finish off your meal with the restaurant's famous selection of Danish cheeses.

International/Fusion

Fregatten ** Vesterbrogade 3, Tivoli Gardens Tel: +45 33-15-9204 On board the Sct Georg III, a replica 27-metre long frigate on the Tivoli lake, dinner can be enjoyed outside or below decks - good honest fare in unusual surroundings. Only open Apr-Sep. Booking is advised. You can also book the Captain's Cabin for private parties. Sult ** Vognmagergade 8B Tel: +45 33-74-3417 Opposite the Kongens Have (King's Garden, next to Rosenborg Castle), this is a great place for light meals, the brunch buffet offering a tasty selection of homemade food for DKR135. Its location inside the Danish Film Institute provides a pleasant, arty atmosphere. Nørrebro Byghus **/*** Ryesgade 3 - Tel: +45 35-30-0530 The main reason for visiting Nørrebro Byghus is for the fantastic selection of ales, stouts, lagers and Belgian-style beers all brewed on the premises. The food on offer is equally good, with a mix of international dishes, many of them cooked in beer-infused sauces.

Italian

La Vecchia Signora ** Grønnegade 12 Tel: +45 33-16-0048 A cheerful pizzeria / trattoria near the Kongenshavn park, owned and run by two brothers from Sardinia who are passionate about Italian food and Italian soccer. Pasta Basta * Valkensdorfsgade 22 Tel: +45 33-11-2131 Lively and open very late indeed - 05h00 most days. You can walk in at 04h00 and expect a fairly decent meal among the young clientele.

Organic

Morgenstedet * Fabriksområdet 134, Christiania Tel: n/a One of Christiania's better-known restaurants, the menu consists of decent organic food, including great vegetarian options. It's not the Ritz, but it's fun, healthy and cheap. Alcohol isn't available but the restaurant lets customers bring their own; as the waiter will tell you, you can get it from the shop next door. Payment in cash only. Closed Tuesdays.

Cafés

Café Sorgenfri ** Brollæggerstræder 8 Tel: +45 33-11-5880 This is a very popular café in the city proper, usually packed out with both Danes and visitors who know a good thing when they see it. Relaxed yet lively atmosphere, beer-drinking and decent nosh.

Bars

Having a drink out in Denmark is pretty expensive no matter where you come from. However, the policy of putting prices of alcoholic beverages up hasn't slowed down the Danes' drinking habits any, and drinking is the main way Copenhageners relax of an evening. Bars more resemble English public houses than the airy café bars of Southern Europe although there are signs that this trend is changing. The cold climate also means there is only a short summer window when refreshment can be taken outside - although once you feel the Scandinavian cold you'll be glad of this mercy. There's not much need to look for a specific area in Copenhagen, you'll find yourself naturally gravitating towards the best central places in ever-decreasing and ever more unsteady circles. However, if you have time, it's worth heading slightly out of the centre to explore the northern district of Nørrebro, where many of the hippest bars have opened up of late, along with numerous ethnic restaurants and original boutiques. Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Boutique Lize Enghave Plads 6 Tel: +45 33-31-1560 One of the latest batch of Copenhagen's trendy bars with an enticing list of cocktails. Just a short hop from popular club Vega, this is a top spot for pre-clubbing drinks. Oak Room Birkegade 10 Tel: +45 38-60-3860 Just near Sankt Hans Torv, the square at the heart of the Nørrebro district, the Oak Room is a sleek and stylish bar with an extensive list of superb cocktails, wines and beers, and even a range of Cuban cigars. Cool toilets to boot. Palæ Bar Ny Adelgade 5 Tel: +45 33-12-5471 Extremely fashionable, Palæ is where you'll find Copenhagen's young professionals. Not a cheap place but then not many places in Copenhagen are. The Scottish Pub Rådhuspladsen 16 Tel: +45 33-15-9243 Exactly what it says. Kilts and bagpipes and 70 different types of whisky at the Scottish pub. Café Kys Læderstræde 7 Tel: +45 33-93-8594 A break from the pub bars that dominate Copenhagen nightlife, Café Kys is a more intimate café bar. A good place for a quiet drink particularly in summer when you can sit out on the front. Mojo Løngangsstræde 21 Tel: +45 33-11-6453 Live blues every night and some of the best-priced drinks in Copenhagen can't be a bad mix. It certainly works at Mojo.
