Copenhagen Hotel Guide

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and it is also the largest city of Denmark. Denmark's major port, cultural center, political and economic areas are in the city of Copenhagen. It is occupied by about a fourth of the population and the people, who live there, are Danish.
A small fishing village in the mid-1000's, Copenhagen became a center of trade because of the harbor. It had grown by the 1100's and became a town. In 1254 thetown of Copenhagen was chartered and due to the growth, became more important economically. In 1443, Denmark's capital was Copenhagen.

Between 1250 and 1810, much of Copenhagen was destroyed by wars, fires, and the people were killed by several epidemics. Copenhagen began to grow as a military, political and economic center after recovering from such devastation. In the 1850's Copenhagen began to grow to the west and north and in the late 1800's, the city began to industrialize from the rapid economic growth. In 1894, the city established a free port. The city suffered little damage when the city was occupied by the German troops during World War II.

In the heart of Copenhagen, lies the Town Hall Square. A number of train and bus routes run through the city as the highways and streets extend outward of the Town Hall Square. An amusement park, Tivoli Gardens, and many hotels and office buildings are located near the square. Tivoli Gardens amusement park offers concerts, rides, ballet as forms of entertainment.

Another major square located between King's New Market and Town Hall Square, called Stroget mall, is closed to motor traffic. Stroget has small shops, sidewalk cafes, and department stores. Christiansburg Castle lies east of the Town Hall Square and huses the Supreme Court and Parliament. Near the castle are the Royal Library and The National Archives. There are several museums to look at while you are there.

The Little Mermaid is a world famous statue located in the harbor in Copenhagen, in representation of a character of a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, a famous Danish author.

Because Copenhagen has been around for centuries we depend on it for strength and leadership as it continues to grow and prosper. Although you may not know much about it now you will in the future. Be sure to ask the local residents about information on each land mark. This is important when you are learning about what you are getting ready to see.
