Copenhagen Public-Transport information

Driving

Denmark's road network is good, and relatively uncongested. Frequent and relatively cheap car ferries provide links between islands. Copenhagen is now connected to the continental mainland via the Oresund tunnel and bridge connection to Malmo in Sweden and the 18km long Great Belt Tunnel and Bridge links the islands of Zeeland and Funen. A toll charge is payable for the use of both of these connections. Otherwise due to the necessity of using the ferry network often driving times can be far in excess of mileage driven and you should leave plenty of time for a journey. Also be aware that many of the ferries are booked in advance and if you don't take this precaution you could face a long wait for a free berth. No tolls are payable for the use of the motorway network except for the trans-island bridges. If you take your own car to Denmark you are advised to obtain Green card insurance. Driving is on the right-hand side and seatbelts should be worn at all times. Drivers from the UK should adjust their headlights for right-handed driving. Kits are available on ferries or from any car maintenance shop. You should also be aware that, as in all Scandinavian countries, your headlights must be left on "dipped" at all times you are driving. Speed limits in Denmark are: 50km per hour in urban areas, 80km per hour in open country and 110km per hour on motorways. You are strongly advised to adhere to these speed limits. Huge fines are imposed for speeding and speed traps are not uncommon. Random roadside breath testing is frequently carried out (particularly during winter months) and drink driving is considered an extremely serious offence. A disc parking system operates in most areas of towns and cities. On arrival discs can be obtained from tourist offices or police stations. You must set it to the time you park your vehicle and leave it clearly displayed. The length of time you can stay is restricted according to on street signs. In Copenhagen itself you may find navigation difficult. Much of the town wasn't designed with cars in mind and streets are narrow by modern standards. They are also much bisected by canals and waterways and bridges create bottlenecks for road vehicles. Also in Copenhagen keep a very close eye out for bicycles. Always look over your shoulder before turning in case there is a bike besides you in your mirror's blindspot.
