Nice Itinerary

Nice is a city noted for its historical sights, artistic legacy, and pleasant climate. Situated in the southern part of France near the Mediterranean Sea, Nice enjoys a warm climate year-round, making it an ideal spot for a vacation. Winter days usually do not get any colder than 50 degrees, and it almost never snows, though rain is common. While the heat of the summer can be intense – especially in July and August, with temperatures well above the 80s – it is made bearable by the cool breezes that generate from the nearby sea.

Nice is worth visiting for its historical landmarks, artistic heritage, and panoramic views. The Promenade des Anglais is a renowned walkway that stretches along the sea, lined with palm trees, beaches, and modern buildings such as restaurants and hotels. Other attractive sites include the nineteenth century Basilique Notre-Dame – Nice’s largest church, La Cathedrale Saint Reparate – built in the 1600s, and the sixteenth century L’Ancien Hotel de Ville, which once served as the city’s town hall. When visiting the ruins of Le Chateau, an old eleventh century castle, one can see a breathtaking view of the old city from atop of a hill. The Old Town is filled with structures that have survived from medieval times, including churches, theatres, and taverns.

Aside from its historical charms, Nice is recognized for its artistic and cultural merits. Sometimes referred to as the “Bay of Arts,” it is home to various galleries, museums, art studios, theatres, and also has its own opera house and symphony orchestra. Visitors can view modern European and American art along with seasonal exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art. The Musee et Site Archeologiques houses artifacts from as far back as the bronze age. Nice’s unique cultural identity shines through its folk dancers, street musicians, and theatrical and operatic performances. Nice has an exciting and vivid night life. Nightclubs, karaoke clubs, casinos, and late-night restaurants are everywhere. Moreover, many of its markets and shops are open all night long, perfect for those tourists who are restless shoppers. Nice’s currency is the euro (€), divided into 100 cents. Bills appear in categories of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 euros, and coins in 2€, 1€, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 cents. Most places do not accept payment in the form of U.S. dollars, but there are plenty of areas available for currency exchange.
