Dublin Food-Restaurants information

Irish

Gallagher's Boxty House ** 20 Temple Bar Tel: +353 (0)1-677-2762 If you want to taste the traditional flavours of Ireland you can't miss Gallagher's Boxty House in the heart of Temple Bar. Favourites such as boxty (an Irish potato cake), colcannon (a type of potato and cabbage mash) alongside a range of Irish stews, steaks and fish never fail to pack in the tourists. Jacob's Ladder *** 4-5 Nassau St Tel: +353 (0)1-670-3865 This is one of Dublin's best restaurants, serving excellent modern Irish food and superbly located overlooking Trinity College. Chapter One *** 18-19 Parnell Sq Tel: +353 (0)1-873-2266 In the basement of the Dublin Writers' Museum is another of the city's modern Irish restaurants, with a great menu served in formal surroundings. Johnnie Fox's ** Glencullen, Dublin Mountains, Co. Dublin Tel: +353 (0)1-295-5647 Out of the southern suburbs and way up a Dublin mountain, Johnnie Fox's is a superb and well-known Irish pub/restaurant. Great food from fresh produce, including excellent seafood.

Italian

Unicorn ** 12b Merrion Court, off Merrion Row Tel: +353 (0)1-676-2182 The clientele tends to be relatively affluent university professor or government types (offices of both are nearby) but prices are kept pretty reasonable at Unicorn. Good quality pasta, pizza and all the usual Italian favourites keeps customers coming back for more, especially to visit the famous anti-pasto lunchtime buffet.

Modern European

La Med ** 22 East Essex St, Temple Bar Tel: +353 (0)1-670-7358 A cosy brasserie right in the heart of Temple Bar serving a diverse array of Mediterranean dishes at very reasonable prices. Bá Mizu ** Powerscourt Centre, South William St Tel: +353 (0)1-674-6712 With its stylish interior and relaxed atmosphere, Bá Mizu offers a welcome break from shopping, serving a range of contemporary, international cuisine, along with a good selection of cocktails and bar snacks.

Vegetarian

Nude ** 21 Suffolk St Tel: +353 (0)1-677-4804 The concept at Nude is food that's not been unnecessarily messed around with and the result is admirable. The menu is organic, vegetarian and healthy, healthy, healthy. Cornucopia ** 19 Wicklow St Tel: +353 (0)1-677-7583 A vegetarian restaurant with an extremely relaxed atmosphere. Very popular with the locals, and becoming equally well-known among visitors. Open until 20h00 Monday-Saturday, and 19h00 on Sundays.

Indonesian

Chameleon ** 1 lower Fownes St Tel: +353 (0)1-671-0362 Just off Temple Bar Square you can find one of Ireland's few Indonesian restaurants, serving great "rijstafel" meals - meals based around rice with a selection of bits and bobs to go with it.

Thai

Bangkok Café ** 106 Parnell St Tel: +353 (0)1-878-6618 OK, the décor isn't fantastic, but the Thai food on offer is excellent and more than makes up for the surroundings. Surprisingly cheap too, though do remember to book as space is limited. Thai Orchard ** 7 Westmoreland St Tel: +353 (0)1-671-9969 Delightful restaurant on the outskirts of the Temple Bar area, with a great atmosphere, friendly service and a full menu of authentic Thai dishes.

Mexican

Alamo ** 22 Temple Bar Tel: +353 (0)1-677-6546 The standard Mexican fare - hearty and lots of it, naturally. Good location in the Temple Bar area, and a popular place for dinner. Good veggie options available.

Bars

Dublin pubs range from modern café bars to small drinking dens, although even these are quite cosmopolitan by Irish standards. Stout is the national beverage and if you don't try the black stuff during your stay you'll be missing out on an Irish institution. Ten million pints of Guinness are poured worldwide every day - and more than a few of those are consumed in Dublin pubs. What will immediately strike you in Dublin is how numerous bars and pubs are, so much so that it's impossible to sample them all. Most people simply end up heading for the Temple Bar area of an evening where you'll find loads of pubs clustered together. On a Friday night just follow the steady buzz of noise that emanates from the area's cobbled streets and enter one of Europe's most famous nights out. Alternatively, head for these specific locations: The Brazen Head 20 Bridge St Tel: +353 (0)1-679-5186 Popular with the tourist fraternity the Brazen Head is reckoned the oldest pub in Dublin. Offers live traditional music as well. Bailey 2-4 Duke St Tel: +353 (0)1-670-4939 A pub rich in history but now Bailey has a new modern style and a clientele of media types and minor celebs to hike up the prices. The bar claims a questionable cameo in "Ulysses" but it does have a door salvaged from 7 Eccles St, the home address of Joyce's hero, Leopold Bloom. Doheny & Nesbitt 4-5 lower Baggot St Tel: +353 (0)1-676-2945 A traditional pub and ideal for putting that "Irish theme pub"-inspired perception into its proper place. Packed out with Dublin's intelligentsia and good Guinness - the unofficial best pint in Dublin according to some. Foggy Dew 1 upper Fownes St Tel: +353 (0)1-677-9328 The name relates to a historical Republican song about the war with England. The Foggy Dew offers warm Dublin hospitality and is permanently packed out - but then it is located in Temple Bar. Front Lounge 33-34 Parliament St Tel: +353 (0)1-670-4112 A big slice of Euro-Dublin, the Front Lounge is relaxed, cool and expensive. You might almost suspect more wine than Guinness flows through the lounge and it won't be to everybody's taste. The Temple Bar 48 Temple Bar Tel: +353 (0)1-672-5287 The Temple Bar is always packed with revellers and on a Friday and Saturday you'll be hard pressed to get even enough elbowroom to lift your pint of Guinness. It's neither the cheapest nor the best pub in town but a visit is integral to any tour of the Temple Bar district. Sam Sara 41 Dawson St Tel: + 353 (0)1-677-4444 Enticing Moroccan-style bar, with extensive cocktail list and perfect-for-lounging decor.
