Cervejaria Trindade */** Rua Nova da Trinidade 20, Bairro Alto - Tel: +351 21-342-3506 An enormous beerhall decorated with Portuguese tiles. Some of the seafood can be expensive, but the atmosphere is always upbeat and fun, and prices begin at the low end if you're careful in your ordering. Casa do Leão *** Castelo de S Jorge Tel: +351 21-888-0154 Traditional restaurant in attractive surroundings inside the S Jorge castle, in the Alfama district. One of the most stylish places to eat in the city, with tables outside in the summer providing great views over the city.

Seafood

Doca 6 ** Doca de Santo Amaro, Armazém 6 Tel: +351 21-395-7905 Considered by some to be the only place to be seen to eat in the dock district. Naturally, considering its location, Doca 6 specialises in seafood. Gambrinus *** Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, 25 Tel: +351 21-342-1466 Wood panels and jacketed waiters make this one of the most popular top end restaurants in Lisbon. Even by the high standards of Portugal the seafood here is considered a cut above the norm. The waiters deserve note for their willingness to help you if you're struggling dealing with the trickier shellfish on the menu. A Travessa ** Travessa do Convento das Bernardas, 12 Tel: +351 21-390-2034 Great fish and seafood restaurant with a leaning towards Belgian cuisine. The mussels are particularly good.

Brazilian

Brasuca * Rua João Pereira da Rosa 7 Tel: +351 21-322-0740 If you are really looking for a taste of the colonial past, Brasuca is the best place to find it. Near the old town this is probably the best of Lisbon's Brazilian eateries. Olde worlde décor - and pricing - adds to the charm.

Indian

Cantinho da Paz ** Rua da Paz, 4, Bairro Alto Tel: +351 21-390-1963 This restaurant brings the flavours of Portugal's former Indian colonies to Lisbon with some excellent Goan seafood curries. It's not that easy to find unless you have a good map, although it's popular enough that you should get directions no problem.

African

En'clave * Rua Sol-Rato 71a Tel: +351 21-388-8738 Perhaps the best-known African restaurant in the city, En'clave serves a variety of dishes from the former Portuguese colonies. The seafood dishes are particularly good.

Bars

Cafés, tascas, and beer halls (Cervejarias) are liberally scattered throughout Lisbon, so you'll never be short of refreshment in the day. The heart of Lisbon's bar culture is the Bairro Alto where bars have squeezed into every available space. Younger, rival areas have begun to spring up, notably around the docks (Docas) but this is more popular for nights out than for afternoon refreshments. If you fancy heading for somewhere specific though, try these suggestions: Artis Bar Rua Diário Notícias 95-97, Bairro Alto Tel: +351 21-342-4795 Opens early evening until late and offers jazz music and robust furnishings. Good place to get a snack late on but guaranteed to get busy. Enoteca Rua Mäe Água, Príncipe Real Tel: +351 21-342-2079 A wine-bar converted from a swimming baths. Strange as it sounds it's actually surprisingly nice with an open terrace for early evening drinks. Divina Comédia Largo de St Martinho 6, Sé Tel: +351 21-887-5598 Open 11h00-19h00 Mon, Sun; 11h00-03h00 Tue-Sat. Open all day, practically, and offers a middle of the road menu as well as wines and cooling drinks. O'Gilins Rua dos Remolares 8, Cais do Sodré Tel: +351 21-342-1899 No surprise that Lisbon boasts an Irish theme pub, but O'Gilins is a lively bar if you don't mind the themed interior or the live Irish jigs. Stout, and sturdy snacks are the order of the day. Lux Avenida Infante D Henrique, Santa Apolonia Tel: +351 21-882-0890 Very much the place in Lisbon at the moment - Lux employs '70s retro styling to attract the crowd to its labyrinthine interior. A great harbour place hangout but not too cheap.
