Combining Russian and European cuisine right across the street from the Kremlin, a night at the Moskovsky will be unforgettable.
Traditional
Café Suliko ** Ul. Bolshaya Polyanka, 42/2 Tel: +7 (8)495-238-2888 For those eager to try Georgian cuisine, the traditionally decorated Café Suliko has the best location, service and prices. The food is incredibly rich and diverse. Georgian wines, although mostly sweet, are enjoyable. Elki Palki * Tverskaya ulitsa, 18a Tel: +7 (8)495-200-3920 This branch is the most central of Elki Palki's half a dozen restaurants located in the downtown area of the city. Cheap and authentic Russian food has made the chain a favourite with the locals. Simple, filling traditional fare gives you a proper taste of the Motherland and a chance to rub shoulders with real Muscovites. Bacchus ** Malaya Bronnaya ulitsa, 20a Tel: +7 (8)495-209-6462 At the Bacchus anything that can be cooked on a grill will be. Sausages, sandwiches, steaks and shashlik (shish kebab) are all on order here at this reasonably priced restaurant. An excellent array of beers are also to be found on tap: Tuborg, Nevskoye, Baltika and Heineken. Godunov *** Teatralnaya Square, 5 Tel: +7 (08)495-298-5609 Atmospheric Russian restaurant with a traditional menu of meat cooked on birch coals, chicken kievs, sturgeon and the like, plus an impressive list of vodkas. Great decor, and regular live entertainment with Russian musicians and dancers - a bit touristy, but fun.
Turkish
Bosfor ** Stary Arbat, 47 Tel: +7 (8)495-241-9320 A restaurant for those with Levantine and Turkish tastes, Bosfor will not disappoint. The restaurant is elaborately decorated with hookahs and carpets and a coffee grinder in the middle of the room. Dancers are a frequent occurrence during evening meals.
Italian
San Marco ** Ulitsa Arbat, 25 Tel: +7 (8)495-291-7089 The Arbat location and the Italian menu at San Marco, while containing few surprises, more than does the job of bringing a Mediterranean flavour to the middle of Old Moscow. Popular and reasonable value ensure it's a solid choice. Tesoro * Romanov peeulok Tel: +7 (8)495-937-7730 Not far from the central attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin, Tesoro is always popular with tourists. The restaurant is more expensive than the pizzeria where you can get a main course for under RUR100. Set in a quiet square it allows a respite from the thronging crowds of the Kremlin and Red Square.
Swedish
Scandinavia *** Maly Palashevsky Pereulok, 7 Tel: +7 (8)495-937-5630 One of the most expensive dining options, Scandinavia is also one of the most versatile and high-quality restaurants around. As you might expect in a Swedish restaurant, there are loads of fish options, and all are excellent. If you fancy splurging, this is the place to do it.
Bars
Bars in Moscow are big business and run the whole gamut from traditional Russian drinking dens, through hip student hangout to the worst examples of expat pub you could imagine. You can't fault them for enthusiasm however; drinking is a big past time in Moscow. A word of note: some tourist targeted Russian bars and clubs offer "special" entertainment (i.e. strip tease) on Friday and Saturday nights so check before you go in as to what you're going to get. Le Gastronome Kudrinskaya ploschad, 1 Tel: +7 (8)495-255-4433 Live piano music and fine views atop one of Moscow's famed "Seven Sisters." Le Gastronome is the bar in the restaurant for which it is named. The bar is quite elegant and a great place to spend a romantic evening out in Moscow. Riverside Mantulinskaya ulitsa, 10 Tel: +7 (8)495-256-8220 Offering a fine selection of beers, Riverside is a fun place. The bar has a friendly and helpful staff, billiards, darts and often live music. Arsentyich Bolshoi Cherkassovsky pereulok, 15 Tel: +7 (8)495-927-0755 The best mini-brewery in Moscow, Arsentvich provides an enjoyable night out. Atmosphere, clientele and good service all combine to make Arsentvich not just a favourite for the expats but also for the locals. Molly Gwynn Novy Arbat, 24/2 Tel: +7 (8)495-291-3436 Wood and leather interior and lots of beer on tap make Molly Gwynn's a little touch of England in Russia. Molly's serves English and Russian pub food. John Bull 2/9 Smolenskaya Ploshchad No prizes for guessing that this is another English pub and popular expat hangout. Typical English style beer is on offer although the bar menu is rather more wide-ranging, featuring Chinese dishes among some more run of the mill bar snacks. Shtolnya Bar Zacepskiy val Tel: +7 (8)495-953-4268 This popular bar has a rough and ready feel to it, but is always packed with customers supping litres of the local brew. Hungry Duck Pushechnaya ulitsa 9/6 Tel: +7 (8)495-923-6158 Famous American style bar and grill the Hungry Duck has been a popular figure on Moscow's scene for some time. You'll find a young crowd of foreigners, students and expats flock here creating an increasingly lively atmosphere as the evening progresses.
