Geneva Public-Transport information

Trams

Geneva has no metro system, but there are a number of tram lines, which run through the city centre and connect it with the suburbs. A one-hour ticket, valid on all trams and buses costs CHF3 and a day pass costs CHF10 for Geneva city and CHF18 for the whole of Geneva canton. Tickets can be bought from chrome ticket dispensers at all stops.

Trains

The main train terminus is Cornavin Station (Gare Cornavin), where trains of the French SNCF network terminate. French trains from Annecy or Chamonix terminate at Gare des Eaux-Vives on the other side of town. As a rail hub, Geneva has extensive local and national train connections and is served by the TGV network, meaning Paris can be reached in under four hours from the city. The railway along the shore of Lake Geneva makes the route one of the most picturesque in Europe and a beautiful way to enter or leave the city. Tickets and passes are available at most stations.

Buses

The bus system in Geneva is very comprehensive with normal buses and trolley buses covering all parts of the city and running to a regular timetable. Tickets can be bought on the bus or from the ticket dispensers positioned at most stops. At weekends there are also special night buses with tickets for a single journey costing CHF3. The international bus station is located at Place Dorcière, in the city centre.

Ferries

The Mouettes Genevoises operate a scheduled boat service along the Rhône riverside and the end of Lake Geneva. The boats can also be chartered for special events. For information, contact Mouettes Genevoises, Société de Navigation SA, 8 quai du Mont-Blanc, Tel: +44 (0)22-732- 2944.

Driving

Good roads and safe conditions make driving a sound option in Geneva and throughout Switzerland. You must drive on the right and overtake on the left. A valid driving licence and third-party insurance are compulsory. There are serious penalties for drivers exceeding the blood alcohol limit of 0.08%. The speed limit within Geneva is 50km per hour (30mph), and 120km per hour (75mph) on motorways. Note that a vignette must be purchased before using motorways; these are available at the border and Swiss National Tourism Offices.

Taxis

With such a good public transport system there is little need to take taxis anywhere in the city. Taxis are also very expensive with individual operators allowed to set their own prices, which can vary widely. If you must call a cab order one in advance. Either ask your hotel to book one for you or try: Taxis New Cab, Tel: +41 (0)22-320-2020 or Taxiphone, Tel: +41 (0)22-331-4133.
