The largest city in the United States is New York City and in the world, it ranks nineth. New York City is known for its trade, culture and has the most important centers of business in the world. Whatever happens in New York City has an effect on all of the United States and around the world. New York City was founded in 1625 by Dutch settlers. Immigrants through out the world are attracted to New York City. Millions of people from Europe came to New York City in the 1800's and 1900's looking for a better life with freedom. In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was erected and the settlers chose the New York Harbor, which became a symbol of this new life and liberty.

Trading organizations, business, and financial organization in New York City has a major impact of the economy of the whole nation and world. Wall Street, the famous stock exchange is located in New York City. Some of the most famous art galleries, museums, and publishing houses have their headquarters in New York City. It is known for it's skyscraper and was the location of the twin towers that was destroyed by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Rockefeller Center, one of the city's landmarks, contains 21 buildings and covers about 25 acres and is the world's largest entertainment facilities and private owned businesses. Some of the buildings within this center include Radio City Music Hall, and RCA. Fifth Avenue has many of New York Cities finest stores and line the streets both south and north of Rockefeller Center.

The families in New York CIty, about 65%, lives in apartments, and hotels and 70% rent their homes instead of buying them. In 1867, New York City passed the first tenement house law, which set standards for ventilation, sanitation facilities and room size. In 1946, a law was passed by the city for a rent control law. This law protected the tenants who privately owned buildings from having rent increases unfairly. New York City buillt a lot of public housing projects and about 170,000 low income families are living in these cities owned public houses today. The average climate in January is 33 degrees and 74 degrees in July. Average annual precipitation from melted snow and rainfall is 44 inches. Dress warm when you visit in the winter and prepare for the heat in the summer. Always pack a jacket when you visit New York City just to be safe.
