Eating Out
Guide to Drinking and Dining in Vienna
Although the glory of the
Empire has long since waned, the Viennese still cultivate the art of
good living and good eating. Local specialities abound, served in
restaurants of outstanding quality and unique character, from the
intimate beisl to the pavement würstelstand. Food is very reasonably
priced, especially when compared to other European capitals, and
portions are Germanically huge.
Look out for specialities including tafelspitz (tender boiled beef),
Wiener Schnitzel (fine, breaded veal) and gulasch (Goulash)
(Hungarian influenced beef stew, spiced with paprika). For dessert
seek out the famous Sacher Torte (the Hotel Sacher's perfect
chocolate cake, flavoured with apricot jam) and strudel (warm, light
pastry encasing fruit or cream cheese).
Dealing with thirst has been elevated to an art form in Vienna.
Vienna did not invent the café, or kafeehaus, but the city was the
site of its perfection. The kafeehaus serves as a venue for quality
lunches, invigorating espresso, and late-night drinks. Most of the
bars serve varieties of the high-quality Austrian beer, and
wine-taverns, known as heurigen, provide chic relaxation. The best
heurigen can be found down the side streets of suburban villages
such as Grinzing, Sievering and Nusdorf.

Bars
A good starting point for a night out on the town is the area known
as the Bermuda Triangle, centred on Rabensteig near the Danube
Canal. It was the first concentrated nightlife zone in the city but
tends to be dominated by teens today - especially at the weekends.
Moving out of the Ring, the "musikcafés" and bars of districts 6, 7
and 8 are worth exploring if you are looking for a youthful
clientele. This is where Vienna's student population is centred and
most bars have a relaxed studenty flavour.
Recently a new hub of activity has emerged around the so-called "Stadtbahnbögen"
(between Nussdorferstrasse and Josefstädterstrasse). These arches
running underneath Vienna's suburban railway have now been
revitalised with numerous bars, musikcafés and restaurants. And in
summer - as everywhere in Vienna - the scene switches outdoors.
Der Neue Engel (New Angel)
