Guide to Public Transport in Montreal
Montreal public transport is
run by STM (Societe de Transports de Montreal). STM operates an
excellent four line Metro (subway) and a network of buses across the
whole of Montreal Island. A single ticket costs CAD2.50 and can be
purchased with exact change from bus drivers and Metro stations.
This ticket is valid for one continuous journey by bus and metro.
Ask the bus driver for a transfer or pick up a "correspondence"
inside the metro station of departure.
Discounts on public transport can be obtained by buying a six-ticket
strip known as a "lisiere" from metro stations. This will cost
CAD11.25. Alternatively, STM offers a Tourist Card giving unlimited
travel for one day (CAD8) or three consecutive days (CAD16). These
can be purchased from Berri-Uquam and Bonaventure metro stations
year round and during summer from most major downtown stations.
Driving
With Montreal's efficient public transport system covering downtown,
visitors should only need to rent a car to explore the beautiful
surrounding Quebec countryside.
Speed limits are between 80-110km per hour on highways and 50-70km
per hour within cities and towns, with limits expressed in
kilometres on road signs. Driving is on the right and you must
overtake on the left. The driver and all passengers are obliged to
wear seatbelts at all times.
You are recommended to apply for an international driving licence to
rent a car and drive in Canada if your licence is not written in
English or French; otherwise a valid licence from your own country
should be acceptable. It is best to check with the car hire company
before travelling, though, to be on the safe side.
Car rental companies generally insist on drivers being over 25 and
if they do rent out vehicles to drivers under this age, they tend to
demand high surcharges to cover insurance. Rental companies almost
always request a credit card for payment. You can usually obtain
discounts for weekends and long-term rentals, but bear in mind that
it can be difficult to find a car during holiday periods, so it is
worth booking ahead.

Taxis
Taxis are available from taxi ranks, hotels and also to be hailed on
the street. Taxi fares start at CAD2.50 and rise at approximately
CAD1.25 per kilometre. It is customary in Montreal to leave the
driver a 10% tip.
