Visit Nice - Nice, the capital of the French Riviera and a
glittering jewel of the Côte d'Azur, certainly lives up to the
English meaning of its name - a more perfect location would be hard
to find anywhere in the world. The warm southern French sun is
exquisite, the sea really is an exquisite shade of blue, and the
city seems to be exclusively populated by beautiful people.
It is a city built on wealth and prestige, and not a little
pretension, but who can blame the rich for making the Côte d'Azur
their playground? If we all had the chance we'd do the same. For us
lesser mortals Nice is a place to come and watch the jet set, and
share the dream, albeit temporarily.
Sun-worship vies with fashion as the main activity around here and
if the pebbled beach front is the centre for the former, the
Promenade des Anglais is a homage to haute couture. It is along this
elegant thoroughfare that the most famous of the city's residents
come to see and be seen. The early evening walk along the Promenade
is a Nice institution and a perfect precursor to a meal in one of
Nice's excellent restaurants or a sundowner on the terrace of an
elegant hotel bar. But all this makes Nice sound more vacuous than
it really is.
Although admittedly easy to get into the routine of sun and shopping
by day and elegant wining and dining through the evening, head away
from the Promenade and you'll find a different, more thoughtful
Nice. There are outstanding Chagall and Matisse collections, and the
old town simply oozes Mediterranean charm. Matisse is actually
buried on a hill overlooking the city in the churchyard of Cimiez,
an exclusive suburb of the city and you can find Roman and Grecian
ruins here as well as in the parc du château.
The city is also a thriving centre in its own right. The fifth
largest town in France it has a character and a life independent of
its richer inhabitants, a healthy mixture of work and play centred
on the Place Masséna, the main commercial centre of the city. And
the natural landscape that lies in between Nice and its Côte d'Azur
neighbours is surprisingly varied with hills and mountains, verdant
in spring and dusty in summer, backing unspoiled coastline.
So, pack your designer sunglasses, and your best swimming
costume, and join the good life, if only for a day.
