Guide to Public Transport in Miami
The public transportation
system in Miami consists of buses, a Metrorail and the Metromover
automated transit system. It isn't particularly designed for tourist
use and there is little chance that visitors will make extensive use
of public transport while they are in the city. The system is well
integrated however, with flat fares for journeys and easy transfers
between the various elements. For any transit information call
Miami-Dade Transit on Tel: +1 (1)305-770-3131.
Buses
Buses are operated by Metrobus, part of the Miami-Dade Transit
network. The network provides transport out to the outlying suburbs
as well as around the city centre. It is mainly a commuter service
and isn't of particular use to tourists, although in Miami Beach,
the "L Line" bus is available for transportation up and down and
around Collins avenue.
You pay your fare on boarding in the fare box provided. The standard
fare is USD1.50 for each journey, although if you need to change
buses you should deposit USD1.50 and ask for a transfer ticket from
the bus operator. You can purchase tokens valid for bus and train
journeys for USD14.50, which gives you ten trips.
Trains
The Metrorail system operates through downtown Miami and to suburbs
north, south and west of the city centre. Metrorail does connect to
the Tri-rail system however, which offers transport to towns north
of the city. Fares are the same as for the bus. You deposit cash or
tokens in the gate. Note that if you transfer to the Metromover that
it will be free. Also remember that if you need to use rail and bus
to get to your destination you need to obtain a transfer ticket from
the machine at the rail station where you get on. Bus drivers won't
accept transfer tickets from alighting stations.
Amtrak provides national train connections between Miami and the
rest of the US. The Amtrak rail terminal is located on Northwest
37th Ave.
Metromover
The metromover is an automated transit system that operates through
the downtown area and to outlying suburbs north and south. Although
unlikely that you'll need to utilise the system it is at least free
if you do.
Driving
With many of Miami's most interesting attractions lying just outside
the city or in the suburbs you should certainly consider hiring a
car if staying for more than a few days. Roads tend to be very well
maintained and navigation simple. You will also find that driving in
itself is a pleasure on Florida's long stretches of coast road.
A valid national driver's licence is all that is needed to drive in
the USA but you should ensure you carry this and your passport/ID
with you at all times you are driving a car. It is compulsory to
wear a seatbelt at all times. Driving is on the right hand side. All
road signs and speed restrictions are posted in miles. The speed
limit is 55-65mph (88-104km per hour) on highways, 35-40mph (56km
per hour-64km per hour) in built up areas, and 15-25mph (24-40km per
hour) in residential areas. You are advised to keep to speed limits
at all times. Highway patrols are very vigilant and will not
hesitate to pull you over even if you are only slightly over the
speed limit.
Parking is generally expensive in the metropolitan area and popular
destinations. Note that parking is restricted on streets during
street cleaning. Check street signs for details of when this occurs
in each area.

Taxis
Taxis are available in abundance in Miami. Most taxis are yellow and
can be hired on the street at any time by waving, or at ranks.
Alternatively ask the door man at any hotel to obtain one for you.
Costs are generally USD1.50 for pickup plus USD1 per half mile. It
is recommended to obtain a quote from the driver before leaving for
your destination.
