Rio de Janeiro means the river of January and is the second major city in the country of Brazil behind only Sao Paulo. Many people think that Rio de Janeiro is the capital of Brazil and at one time it was from 1763-1960. Another famous nickname given to Rio de Janeiro is the marvelous city. What makes this stand out from many is the beautiful natural setting it's in. The city was founded in 1565 via Portuguese knight Estacio de Sa. Rio de Janeiro today is divided into districts. They are divided as Centrothat is the historic downtown, South Zone that is the tourist friendly district where majority of the beaches are. The north zone is the industrial section, while the west zone is the newer Barra da Tijuca district. The Centro or downtown district holds many of the financial needs of the country and also hold many of the historic church's that have been around for a very long time. These churches are some of the majority beautiful in the world and are a must see.

South zone is the tourist friendly zone as it holds many shops and things for tourists to do. It's also been called the party zone for all the things you can do here. The locals and the tourists love the south zone and it's an area you will want to visit. The North zone is home to the largest soccer venue in the world. The Maracana stadium holds nearly 180,000 people for an event as it did for the World Cup final in 1950. These numbers are now down somewhat as renovations and safety concerns have lowered the amount of people it can hold safely. The West zone is an area that has more of an American feel as shopping centers are located here and you will different thing from other parts of the city. Rio has a tropical climate that means you will be in a very warm climate. Rio has a huge contrast from the social classes and you will see that. Rio also has a very high crime rate so look out for that.

One thing though for sure, Rio knows how to throw a party and their Carnivals are some of the best in the world, with top notch music and fun that is hard to beat anywhere in the world. Rio is somewhere that parties all the time and finding fun in Rio isn't very hard at all. In fact it may just find you.
