Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland and is also the capital. In the 600's, Edwin of Northumbria, who was an Anglian king, built a fort there and the city of Edinburgh was named after him. Princes Street is the main thoroughfare in the city. On one side of the thoroughfare, there are many huge buildings and on the other side, is a ravine that is used via the railroad as a throughway. Flower Clock is one of Princes Street Gardens famous flowers. There ia a castle on top of a rock called Castle Rock. Built 800 years ago, the Norman Chapel of Saint Margaret is located within the walls of the castle. Historic houses and old Saint Giles' Cathedral is located at Holyrood Castle that is located at Royal Mile.


In the 1500's, Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh was founded. Edinburgh is an important educational and cultural center. In 1682, the Advocates' Library was founded, in that the librarian was David Hume, who was a philosopher.


The Edinburgh drama, music and film festival has attracted many exhibitors clear across the world. The National Gallery, the Royal Scottish Museum and Royal Scottish Academy house many important art collections. Many well recognised magazines have been published in Edinburghthat include: Chambers Encyclopedia, the Book of Days, Edinburgh Review, and Chambers Edinburgh Journal. Fame was won here via such huge authors as; Thomas De Quincey, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Burns. John Knox lived there and he was one who led the Protestant Reformation in Scotland.


The city of Edinburgh is an insurance and banking center. The industries of Edinburgh include paper and textile mills, distilleries, and breweries. Edinburgh is well know for its fairy tale look. It has castles on the hill that look as though there may be a princess in the tallest tower just waiting on prince charming. Even though you may not realize how beautiful this city really is you will learn more as you get settled in and start to see it in a different light. Because Edinburgh is so beautiful you will want to visit more often. When you get busy touring around Edinburgh you may find out that Edinburgh was actually built on dormant volcanoes. This is where everyone wants to be today. It has made it though a lot and it is still standing. Edinburgh is beautiful all year around.
